Red Canoe Credit Union has been a solid member of the community for over 50 years. Holding a whopping 34% market share and only 2 branches, it was time to expand for greater member convenience. With a spectacular new brand and strategy in hand, Red Canoe needed a great location in the western part of their local market to tap additional potential for growth.

A site in downtown Kelso fit the bill perfectly but there was a catch...well, more than one actually. Two previous gas stations and a repair garage. Dirty soil was going to be a problem. Heard this story? Maybe not.

Momentum has been here before, a lot. Great sites with a pristine past in downtown just aren't there anymore. Resolving the legacy problems of urban and suburban locations requires experience and commitment from all parties and the team Momentum assembled, property owner included, was up to the task.

Once the extent of the issues were known, a plan was agreed to and a schedule established. This would be a leased site and Red Canoe would own the building with the option to purchase down the line. The board needed assurance that the risk was manageable, that the cleanup was feasible, and that going forward, there would be no more skeletons in the closet. Momentum and its engineers adopted a process that would do just that. The owner came to the table and the bad dirt was removed.

The story doesn't end there. The site was in a historic district so during cleanup, the prototype branch was adapted to meet local requirements without sacrificing the drive-thru or any operational advantages on the interior. EHS Design did an excellent job; the prototype was intact.

The site had frontage on a state highway. Momentum and the design team worked with the State Dept of Transportation to meet their needs; no small task.

The chamber of commerce gave the CEO a standing round of applause for the fabulous addition to the city. Another happy ending. For Red Canoe and Momentum, though, it's just the beginning.
